This is what we do...

Hidden World- a Triptych

Can be seen at First United Methodist Church until April 30.

In this encaustic masterpiece, Evie skillfully brings to life the serene yet mysterious ambiance of a bayou landscape. The scene is a delicate balance between light and darkness, where the elements coalesce to form a breathtaking tableau.

At the forefront of the image, delicate white flowers with intricate petals seem to emerge from the water’s edge. Their pristine beauty contrasts against the rich, velvety darkness that encircles the bayou. The petals are meticulously rendered using the encaustic technique, allowing the wax to capture their softness and the subtleties of their curves.

The bayou itself stretches into the distance, its tranquil waters mirroring the world above. The water’s surface is treated with layers of translucent wax, giving it a glassy appearance that shimmers as light plays across its undulating surface. In the reflection, the white flowers appear to have a dreamlike quality, as if they’re both part of this world and a realm beyond.

As the bayou retreats into the distance, the scene takes on a more mysterious and dramatic tone. The darkness deepens, transitioning from a cool midnight blue to an intense, inky navy. This deep hue brings a sense of depth and infinite expanse, drawing the viewer’s gaze into the heart of the bayou’s secrets.

The encaustic technique excels at capturing textures, and the artist uses it here to create a tactile representation of the bayou’s surroundings. The surface of the water is slightly textured, conveying the gentle ripples caused by unseen currents. The surrounding foliage is suggested with a delicate layering of greens and browns, creating a backdrop that adds to the overall sense of enchantment.

Abandoned –  Sugar Island MI, this triptych is part of my encaustic series and was chosen to be part of the Grand Valley Artist’s show at the Forest Hills Fine Arts Center in February and March 2022.

Comment on Abandoned…

The encaustic photograph at Forest Hills is AMAZING! I would have awarded it first prize. I’m glad it got good placement on one of the wooden walls. The natural lighting makes it shine.

Wayne and I have visited the exhibit twice and will get out there with some of my family in March. I look forward to seeing your piece again.

Grand Rapids Camera Club Image of the Month October 2021.

This image depicts the SS Arthur M. Anderson, a cargo ship of the Laker type It was captured as she made her way through Lake Superior waters. The Arthur Anderson is famous for being the last ship to be in contact with the SS Edmund Fitzgerald before that ore carrier sank on 10 november, 1975. The Arthur M. Anderson was also the first rescue ship on the scene in a vain search for Edmund Firzgerald survivors.

One of the more popular current theories as to what it was specifically that took the Fitzgerald to the bottom is known as the “Three Sisters Theory.” It proposes that the ship succumbed to the power of two monstrous seas, possibly followed by a third major wave. Of the first two waves there is ample evidence, because they are the ones that struck the Anderson before the Fitzgerald went down. The theory holds that there might have been a third major wave striking the Fitzgerald at the same time.

But, as is the case with all such theories, it is unlikely that we will ever know the whole story behind what caused this shipwreck.

I added a bit of drama to the skies and water…and felt the story in my image would benefit from the yellow skyline depicting hope and help for the Fitz, which was not to be found in this tragic story of search without rescue.

Summer of 2022 The Guardian Gallery

For a BEAUTIFUL little trek -just outside the city-please head over to The Guardian Gallery in Lowell this Summer 2022-I had over 20 pieces hanging -and you will find triptychs, encaustics, and an amazing summer of tulips and sunrises–eye candy for all, among the beautiful gardens of the Franciscan Life Center.

A comment: Thank you so very much for letting us have your beautiful work here.  There were many people who came to visit it.  There are Psychologists here, who have monthly meetings with one.  He came with his wife, and they exclaimed about them yesterday.  The wife said, “Who is this artist????  She’s fabulous!!!”  She went around the Center to look at all the work.
